What is God’s will?

November 26, 2008

Thanksgiving for the Christian is not an event. It is part of God’s will for our lives. Look at our scripture verse of the week; God’s will is for us is to rejoice, pray and give thanks in everything.

Notice that prayer is to be sandwiched between rejoicing and thanksgiving. Now I will admit that sometimes when I go to prayer, I go with an attitude other than rejoicing and I hope when I finish I can end in thanksgiving. As we get ready for our Thanksgiving,The Apostle Paul tells us how we should we prepare to give thanks.

First we are to rejoice. The attitude of a heart of prayer is an attitude that is founded in the joy that comes from the knowledge that we are welcomed into His presence. Deep within each of us who know and have been partakers of the grace of God is the satisfying joy that He has accepted us in Christ.

Next we are to continually pray. After we have prepared by opening the treasure of joy in our hearts, next comes “pray without ceasing.” The picture here is a constant conversation. If you had an angel, personally present with you every day, wouldn’t you ask his opinion about everything you experienced? Well, you have someone better than an angel, the Holy Spirit of God. We have the privilege of an ongoing conversation with Him every day.

That brings us to thanksgiving. Our thanksgiving is independent of circumstances. We so often think of the things that we are thankful for: the people, the events, the possessions we have. But the thanksgiving that flows from the heart of a believer is not dependent on things or people, instead it is totally dependant on the living relationship we have with God through Christ in prayer.

Today I challenge you to think about the relationship you have with your heavenly Father. Think about His grace, His compassion, His abiding care. Rediscover the joy of knowing that He has reached out to you. Experience Him though the spirit of prayer and then you will find the satisfaction of real thanksgiving, no matter what your circumstances.

Scripture Verse of the Week:
16 Be joyful always; 17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

Please & Thank You

November 25, 2008

For the last three weeks our grandchildren Asa & Carys McGee have been staying with us and it has been a joyful time for Debbie and me.  Among the first words 2 year old Asa was taught to say are please and thank you. No one gets quite as excited or as proud as a parent or grandparent of a toddler who first utters those words and makes the connection between asking politely and receiving gratefully.

I am sure that when we as children of God come to Him in prayer He is delighted when we ask and are grateful for what we receive. This Sunday I will be continuing my series on The Lord’s Prayer and will be speaking on how we ask God to “Give us this day our daily bread”. You can hear it after Sunday at www.celebratejesus.org

Please make it a habit of humbly asking God for whatever it is you need and then give thanks to Him with a grateful heart in all circumstances. Thank you.

Thank God On Monday

November 24, 2008

God is very popular on Sunday. Yesterday millions of people around the world stopped what they’re doing to visit a building where the sole purpose is to meet with others to worship, learn and give thanks to God for who he is and what he has done. But then Monday rolls around and I ask what place does God have in your life today?

The apostle Paul, instructs us in our scripture verse for the week to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17)—a sure sign that God is listening on Monday through Saturday too. Paul also wrote, “Rejoice always” (v.16), which indicates that we shouldn’t stop singing just because the organ stops playing. And what about the command, “In everything give thanks”? (v.18). That would surely suggest that the rest of the week is just as full of opportunities to say, “Thank You, God. Sunday is a special day to set aside time to pay homage to God. But it doesn’t stop there. Don’t forget to do the same today!

God’s name isn’t a cuss word

November 21, 2008

Most people think we hallow God’s name by not using it as a cuss word when you hit your thumb with a hammer or shank a golf shot. That’s true but a positive way to hallow God’s name is to sing praises to Him. Another way we hallow His name is by simply trusting Him.

Every time I doubt God is going to provide for my needs I’m breaking one of the Ten Commandments by taking His name in vain. Every time I don’t think He has my best interest at heart I’m taking His name in vain.  Every time I say I’m a Christian but I don’t act like it, I’m taking His name in vain.

We honor God’s name when we trust Him to meet our needs.

Psalm 9:10 says “Those who know your name will trust in you.” The more you know God’s name, the better you know God the more you’re going to trust Him.

When Anne Sullivan, the tutor for Helen Keller, first communicated the idea of God to her she responded “I’ve always known He was there.  I just didn’t know His name.”

Do you know God’s name?  The greatest name of God is found in Philippians 2 “God has given Jesus the name that is above every other name that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.”  The greatest name for God is Jesus. Say it, sing it, proclaim it.

Scripture Verse of the Week:
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. Ephesians 1:17 (NIV)

Harold or Art?

November 20, 2008

When I was a kid in Mrs. Eilers’ Sunday School class at Galewood Community Church learning the Lord’s Prayer I got confused.  What was God’s real name because I was getting mixed messages.  I recited the Lord’s Prayer saying,  “Our Father who Art in heaven, Harold is thy name.” Which was it, Art or Harold? (These were both popular names in the day).

Mrs. Eilers tried to clear up the matter by explaining the phrase was “hallowed be thy name.” That didn’t much help. What does hallowing a name mean? God is Holy, sacred, and we honor Him by venerating or revering or hallowing His name.

How do I hallow God’s name today?  Well one of the ways we hallow God’s name is by praising His name. Have you notice how many songs we sing are about God’s name?

“Blessed Be the Name of the Lord” or “Lord I Lift Your Name On High” are examples.   The Bible says “O magnify the Lord with me.  Let us exalt His name forever.”  God’s name represents who He is.  When we praise God, we hallow His name.

So today hallow God’s name. Bless the name of the Lord, lift His name on high or as we sing in another praise song,

On my lips there's a shout of praise,
Now I'm gonna dance for all my days,
because I've seen the wonder of Your loving ways
So much joy here in Your embrace,
makes me wanna sing and celebrate
because I've seen the wonder of amazing grace

Born Again

November 19, 2008

In the Lord’s Prayer Jesus teaches us to pray, “Our father in heaven… which means we must be must be created to become a part of his family. We’re not children of God by getting baptized or tithing or promising to go to church or never sinning or promising to be perfect.  If you had to be perfect to be a child of God, no one would be.  Fortunately God made it so simple nobody could say it was too hard to understand.  He just said, “Put your trust in My Son.  Believe on Him.  The Bible says, “To as many as received Him, to them He gave the power to become the children of God.”  We believe and we receive.

There is only one way to get into your physical human family here on earth.  That is to be born into it.  So how do you get into God’s family?  You must be born again, born anew, born from above.  It’s a spiritual birth and it’s just as important as your physical birth.  You were physically born into the human family, then you get spiritually born into God’s family.  How do you get spiritually born? Ask God to welcome you into His family though your faith in Jesus Christ. Get to know him better each day, then live today thankfully that you are a part of the greatest family on earth, the church of Jesus Christ.

Scripture Verse of the Week:
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. Ephesians 1:17 (NIV)

Who’s Your Daddy?

November 19, 2008

In the Lord’s Prayer Jesus teaches us to pray, “Our father in heaven…Those words bring up some interesting questions like who can call God father?  Is everybody in the world God’s child?  Is God the father of everybody?  Well the answer to those questions is yes and no.  Yes, every human being is a child of God in the sense that we’re all created by God.

But no, not everybody is able to call Him Father, or as Jesus intimately called God, “Abba”, which is like calling Him Daddy. Not everybody who was created by God has a relationship with God.

There’s a lot more to being a Father than just birthing kids.  There’s a bond that develops that draws a child to their Father so that He becomes their Daddy. God says, “Yes, everybody’s My child in the sense that I created them all.  But, no, everybody’s not My child, in the sense that not everybody has chosen to be a part of my family.”

The question then becomes, “How do I become a child of God?”  How do I get God to be my Father…My Daddy?  How do I establish this relationship?  God says in Galatians 3:26 “We are children of God through faith in Jesus Christ. Why should you go another day without a close, personal, loving, relationship with your heavenly Father? Just come to Him today as a child comes to their loving father and ask Him to be the head of your household.
